Ce tissu, sans doute destiné à la parure vestimentaire ou à l’ameublement, a probablement été fabriqué dans les manufactures de Grenade, connues au XIVe et XVe siècles pour produire des soieries qui s’exportaient au loin. Son décor a dû être un des plus édités et diffusés, car de nombreux exemplaires se sont conservés jusqu’à nos jours dans différentes collections.
Cette soierie façonnée est un lampas lancé trois lats, c’est à dire un tissu à effet de trames, technique qui s’est diffusée en Andalousie à partir de modèles orientaux.
Le décor est divisé en multiples registres où le rouge prédomine ; il fait appel à de nombreux motifs géométriques renforçant l’effet de marqueterie ou de réseau produit par les étoiles à huit pointes. Ces jeux de polygones et leur coloris rappellent avec insistance la décoration des céramiques, des mosaïques et des stucs de la Cour des Lions, à l’Alhambra. C’est pour cette raison que certains auteurs parlent à propos de ces textiles de : « style de l’Alhambra ».
Les merlons, ou « pins nasrides » qui se répètent sur les lisières du tissu ressemblent à ceux qui couronnent les façades de la Mosquée de Cordoue. La décoration du textile comprend également des inscriptions en arabe, en différentes calligraphies ; on peut y lire bonheur et prospérité ; elles ont peut être été élaborées à l’époque de Muhammad V.
Les manufactures textiles de Grenade ont continué à produire après la prise de la ville, grâce à la participation des Morisques. Ils ont bénéficié de la protection du pouvoir qui, lors des expulsions, accordait des « exemptions aux fileurs et aux teinturiers, parce que les chrétiens de souche ne connaissaient pas cet art. »
Un fragment similaire est conservé au Metropolitan Museum de New York[1]. D’autres pièces semblables sont répartie dans différents musées : le Musée Archéologique National, le Musée de Lyon, l’Institut de Valence de Don Juan ou l’Hispanic Society de New York.
