Cette lettre fait partie d’une collection privée composée de soixante-trois documents en vénitien, d’origines et de dates diverses, la majorité datant du XVe siècle. Il s’agit, dans la plupart des cas, de missives écrites par des correspondants de compagnies commerciales vénitiennes depuis leurs comptoirs de Beyrouth, Tripoli, Damas ou Alep. Rédigées sur papier, elles sont de dimensions et de longueurs différentes, et un certain nombre porte encore le cachet postal. Elles sont pourtant toutes faites selon un même schéma, s’ouvrant par une invocation à la divinité, précédée d’un signe de croix sommairement tracé, et suivie par la date et le lieu. Ces éléments sont le plus souvent en latin. Le texte de la lettre, qui commence par des compliments adressés au destinataire, contient les détails des affaires qui forment l’objet de la missive.
Dans cette lettre, un certain Antonio da Ponte annonce à Donato Soranzo, un entrepreneur vénitien, que deux musulmans conduisant une chrétienne sont arrivés à Beyrouth sur un petit bateau venant de Famagouste. Il indique ensuite qu’il a pu vendre les marchandises qu’il avait reçues pour la somme de vingt ducats.
D’un point de vue paléographique, l’écriture de cette lettre fait partie de la catégorie dite mercantesche caractéristique des marchands. Elle a été crée par les marchands du Nord et du Centre de l’Italie au début du XIVe siècle, puis s’est répandue au XVe jusqu’à la première moitié du XVIe siècle. C’est une écriture professionnelle, utilisée non seulement dans les lettres, mais aussi dans des minutes, livres de compte, etc.
L’analyse de la langue et le contenu des documents, dont cette lettre, montre non seulement le dynamisme des contacts linguistiques arabo-vénitiens et arabo-italiens, mais aussi le rôle économique de certains ports libanais dans les rapports et échanges commerciaux avec Venise.
