This letter is part of a private collection comprising sixty-three documents in Venetian, of various origins and dates, most of them from the fifteenth century. They are, in most cases, messages written by the correspondents ofVenitian commercial companies from their trading posts in Beirut, Tripoli, Damascus or Alep. Written on paper, they are of various sizes and lengths, and a certain number of them still bare the postal seal. However, they all follow the same formula, starting with an invocation to God, preceded by a summarily drawn cross, and followed by the date a place. These elements are most often in Latin. The text of the letter, which starts with compliments addressed to the recipient, contains the details of the business that is the object of the letter.
In this letter, one named Antonio da Ponte announces to Donato Soranzo, a Venetian entrepreneur, that two Muslim men accompanying a Christian woman have arrived in Beirut on a small boat from Famagusta. He then states that he was able to sell the merchandise that he had received for twenty ducats.
From a paleographic standpoint, the calligraphy used in this letter falls under the category called mercantesche characteristic of merchants. It was created by the merchants of Northern and Central Italy at the beginning of thefourteenth century, then spread during the fifteenth up to the first half of the sixteenth century. It is a professional script, used not only for correspondence, but also for minutes, account books, etc.
Analysis of the language and contents of documents, including this letter, shows not only the dynamism of Arab-Venetian and Arab-Italian linguistic contacts, but also the economic role of certain Lebanese ports in the relations and commercial exchanges with Venice.
