This work on minerals was attributed to Aristotle, but its true author is not known. The name of Hunayn ibn Ishaq (808-873) has sometimes been put forward: doctor and philosopher, Nestorian Christian, Ibn Ishaq translated in Baghdad many Greek texts into Arabic and Syriac, and was also the author of many scientific texts. It was thanks to him – and to other scientists working in Baghdad in the ninth and tenth centuries – that Hellenistic science was translated, commented and later spread through to the Occident. These texts first made their way from the Orient to the Muslim Occident (Cordoba, Toledo), where they were translated into Latin. The translator of this text is identified as being Luqa ibn Sarafiyun, but it is not known whether he worked from Greek or Syriac. The copyist, who completed his work in Tripoli in 1329, declared himself the owner of the work on the title page.
The text of the book of stones is said to have covered about seven hundred minerals, but the translator only translated about one hundred that to him were of general interest, with details on their composition, colour, type, and the mines from which they were extracted. There is also a section on the various magnets and their virtues. The titles, which correspond to the names of the minerals, are written in the same ink as the text, but the characters are thicker; they are sometimes inserted in the body of the text, sometimes written on their own separate line.
