Cette œuvre portant sur les minéraux a été attribuée à Aristote, mais son véritable auteur est inconnu. Le nom de Hunayn ibn Ishâq (808-873), a parfois été avancé : médecin et philosophe, chrétien nestorien, Ibn Ishâq traduisit à Baghdad de nombreux textes grecs en arabe et en syriaque et fut aussi l’auteur de nombreux textes scientifiques. C’est grâce à lui – et à d’autres scientifiques oeuvrant à Baghdad aux IXe et Xe siècles – que la science hellénistique fut traduite, commentée, et plus tard diffusée jusqu’en Occident. Ces textes passèrent tout d’abord de l’Orient à l’Occident musulman (Cordoue, Tolède), où ils furent traduits en latin. Le traducteur de ce texte est identifié comme étant Lûqâ ibn Sarâfiyûn, mais nous ne savons pas s’il a travaillé à partir du grec ou du syriaque. Le copiste, qui a terminé son travail à Tripoli en 1329, s’est déclaré propriétaire de l’ouvrage sur la page du titre.
Le texte du livre des pierres traiterait environ de sept cents minéraux, mais le traducteur s’est limité à une centaine qui lui semblaient avoir un intérêt général, avec des détails sur leur composition, leur couleur, leur genre et les mines d’où ils sont extraits. Il existe aussi une section sur les différents aimants et leurs vertus. Les titres, qui correspondent aux noms des minéraux, sont de la même encre que le texte mais leur tracé est plus épais ; ils sont parfois insérés dans le corps du texte, parfois sur une ligne isolée.
