Esta obra, que trata sobre los minerales, fue atribuida a Aristóteles, pero se desconoce su verdadero autor. El nombre de Hunayn ibn Ishâq (808-873) se ha dicho varias veces: médico y filósofo, cristiano nestoriano, Ibn Ishâq tradujo en Bagdad numerosos textos griegos en árabe y en sirio y fue también el autor de numerosos textos científicos. Fue gracias a él – y a otros científicos que trabajaron en Bagdad en los siglos IX y X – que la ciencia helenística se tradujo, se comentó y, más tarde, se difundió hasta Occidente. Estos textos pasaron primero del Oriente al Occidente musulmán (Córdoba, Toledo), donde fueron traducidos en latín. Se identifica como traductor de este texto a Lûqâ ibn Sarâfiyûn, pero no sabemos si trabajó a partir del griego o del sirio. El copista, que terminó su trabajo en Trípoli en 1329, se declaró propietario de la obra en la página del título.
El texto del libro de las piedras trataría en torno a setecientos minerales, pero el traductor se limitó a una centena que le parecían tener un interés general, con detalles sobre su composición, color, género y las minas de donde se extraen. Existe también una sección sobre los diferentes imanes y sus virtudes. Los títulos, que corresponden a los nombres de los minerales, son de la misma tinta que el texto pero su trazado es más espeso; a veces están insertados en el cuerpo del texto y otras veces en una línea aislada.
