Se trata de una traducción en latín de un texto árabe, el Kitâb sirr al-asrâr, que se presenta bajo la forma de una larga carta de Aristóteles a Alejandro Magno en el momento de la conquista de Persia, en la que le da consejos morales, políticos y médicos para dirigir su imperio. La traducción del griego al sirio y, a continuación, al árabe se atribuye a Yahyâ ibn al-Bitrîq (m. 815). La obra se inscribe en la tradición de los «espejos de los príncipes», nacidos con la prosa literaria, que se desarrollan en el mundo arabo-musulmán clásico a partir del siglo IX y de los que existe un gran número de obras tan variadas como el Kalîla wa-Dimna de Ibn al-Muqaffa‘ (siglo VIII) o el Kâbûsnâmeh (Libro de Kâbûs) de Kay Kâ'ûs (m. v. 1100), por citar sólo dos.
El Secreto de los secretos fue conocido en Europa occidental a partir del siglo XIII. Los numerosos manuscritos conservados en latín y en varias lenguas vernaculares demuestran su éxito a lo largo de toda la Edad Media, popularidad que se prosiguió hasta el Renacimiento. Se difundió en Europa según dos versiones, una corta y una larga. Esta ultima fue traducida al latín después de 1227 por Felipe de Trípoli, un clérigo desconocido que dedicó su obra a su obispo, Guy de Trípoli. Según Jean Richard, la traducción de Felipe no denota un arabista de talento, pero prueba que el medio eclesiástico en Trípoli no fue indiferente a la existencia de un foco de cultura oriental. La destrucción de todas las bibliotecas latinas de Trípoli por los mamelucos en 1289 nos priva de informaciones sobre otros contactos de esta naturaleza.
Este manuscrito está redactado en cursiva gótica, una escritura desarrollada en el mundo occidental a partir del siglo XII, del que existen numerosas variantes. Las mayúsculas están realzadas en rojo; las letras floridas están decoradas con motivos vegetales y realzadas de rojo y azul.
