Cette coupe d’assez grande taille accuse une forme tronconique. Sa paroi est carénée et ses bords sont légèrement évasés. Ses deux faces sont couvertes d’une glaçure de couleur jaune altérée.
Le fond est occupé par un personnage féminin représenté debout de profil, les cheveux ramenés en arrière, vêtu d’un costume orné d’écailles et de fines rayures brunes, et tenant dans sa main gauche une coupe. La dame est entourée de quatre fleurs de lotus et flanquée de deux cartouches dans lesquels est tracé le mot « al-mulk » (la puissance), répété deux fois.
Cette représentation humaine marque une évolution manifeste dans l’art figuratif ifriqiyen, attestée à partir de l'époque fatimide. Le visage féminin se distingue par un oeil de profil surdimensionné, déjà visible sur plusieurs tessons du Xe siècle trouvés à Madinat al-Zarah, et repris de façon moins exagérée dans l'art fatimo-ziride.
Les décors anthropomorphes à visage féminin sont plus fréquents en Orient qu'en Occident musulman. Ils apparaissent déjà à l'époque omeyyade sur les fresques des hammams du désert syrien, comme à Qusayr Amra où apparaissent des danseuses et des femmes au bain. A l'époque abbasside, cette représentation subit l'influence de l’Iran sassanide voire de l'Asie centrale : une peinture murale datée du IXe siècle provenant du palais de Jawsaq à Samarra (Irak) présente deux danseuses portant une tunique longue et une coiffure tressée très longue. Plus tard, l'Égypte fatimide nous offre quelques belles coupes lustrées où apparaissent des représentations féminines d'une grande beauté, aux traits raffinés, à l'exemple du plat à la femme assise jouant du luth, conservé au musée d'art islamique du Caire, daté du XIe siècle[1]. Les Ayyubides de Syrie ont produit des coupes où les visages sont d’un type plus asiatique[2]. Ces parallèles établis nous permettent d’inscrire les représentations féminines de Sabra al-Mansūriyya dans une tradition iconographique présente dans tout le monde islamique médiéval.
Les cartouches comportant le terme « al-mulk », très fréquents sur les coupes ifriqiyennes, trouvent un écho dans la céramique omeyyade d'Espagne[3].
Notons que les fouilles de Sabra ont mis à jour deux autres plats analogues, avec des différences minimes, attestant qu'il s'agit d'une production locale qui fut sans doute exportée dans plusieurs régions de Méditerranée Occidentale.
