Este par de pendientes presenta una composición bastante simple: una gran bola está ensartada sobre un aro de hilo de plata cuyos extremos cierran el pendiente. La superficie de la bola está compartimentada por medio de un hilo de plata que delimita siete bandas; las cuatro de en medio contienen círculos que en su momento parece que contenían decoración de filigrana.
La decoración geométrica de estos pendientes es muy simple y está tomada de motivos comunes de la civilización islámica. Éstos aparecen en otros pendientes omeyas o abbasíes, en los que la parte inferior del círculo presenta frisos que contienen diferentes rosetones realizados con pequeños círculos[1]. También tienen similitudes con las joyas de época fatimí realizadas en oro con filigrana, en forma de media luna de oro macizo[2]. Algunos elementos de las joyas beréberes están muy relacionados con la decoración de la bola de estos pendientes, como las grandes cuentas de collares adornados con esmaltes tabicados o con filigranas, conocidos como tagemmout o tagmoust, cuya superficie presenta bandas con motivos circulares.
Se podrían citar innumerables joyas similares a esta pieza, ya sea por su forma esférica o por la utilización de la filigrana. La decoración geométrica ha sido muy empleada por la civilización islámica, no sólo en la joyería, sino también en numerosos dominios de las artes decorativas.
La filigrana, técnica decorativa muy apreciada por su finura y su belleza, se encuentra en diferentes civilizaciones, como la egipcia, etrusca y griega. Se cree que fueron los fenicios los que la transmitieron a los países del Mediterráneo. En el norte de la Europa medieval también se empleó, algunas veces asociada al esmalte, como en Escandinavia. En Italia el orfebre más célebre del Renacimiento, Benvenuto Cellini[3], creó joyas muy bellas de filigrana que recordaban a las del Oriente musulmán, en concreto a las de Egipto.
