Cette paire de boucle d’oreille présente une composition assez simple : une large perle est enfilée sur un anneau fait d’un fil d’argent dont les extrémités forment des boucles. La perle présente sur sa surface un décor compartimenté réalisé avec un fil d’argent délimitant sept bandeaux ; les quatre du milieu enserrent des cercles autrefois meublés semble-t-il d’un décor de filigranes.
La décoration géométrique de ces boucles d’oreille est simple, puisée dans un répertoire de motifs répandu dans la civilisation islamique. En témoignent des boucles d’oreille omeyyades ou abbassides, dans lesquelles la partie inférieure du cercle présente des frises contenant différentes rosaces constituées de petits cercles[1]. On trouve également des ressemblances avec des bijoux de l’époque fatimide en or filigrané, en forme de croissants, en or massif[2]. Certains éléments des bijoux berbères s’apparentent fortement à la perle de ces boucles d’oreille, telles les grosses boules de colliers ornées d’émaux cloisonnés ou de filigranes, connues sous le nom de tagemmout ou tagmoust, qui présentent sur leur surface des bandeaux aux motifs circulaires.
On peut recenser d’innombrable parures proches de cette pièce, soit par leur forme sphérique, soit par l’utilisation du filigrane. Le goût de la civilisation islamique pour l’ornementation géométrique est notable ici et se retrouve dans de multiple domaines des arts décoratifs.
Le filigrane, technique décorative très appréciée pour sa finesse et sa beauté, se retrouve dans différentes civilisations, égyptienne, étrusque et grecque. On pense qu’elle fut transmise aux pays de la Méditerranée par les Phéniciens. Au nord de l’Europe, au Moyen-Âge, on utilisait le filigrane, parfois associé à l’émail comme en Scandinavie. En Italie, le plus célèbre des orfèvres de la Renaissance, Benvenuto Cellini[3], créa de très beaux bijoux en filigrane rappelant ceux de l'Orient musulman et en particulier de l’Égypte.
