Inscription en écriture maghrébine sur sept lignes, dont la sourate «al Zumar », (v.32) et la sourate « Qâf », (v.19-21).
La collection qui appartenait à la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan fut transférée à la Bibliothèque Nationale de Tunis où elle fut conservée pendant seize ans avant d'être déposée en 1983 au musée de Raqqada.
Ces deux feuillets sont tirés d’un coran copié sur papier. Au recto du premier feuillet se trouve l'acte de constitution en legs de l’ouvrage au profit de la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan par le sultan hafside Muhammad al-Hasan au début du mois de sha'bân 903 H. (1498).
Le début de la sourate copiée au verso est inscrit dans un
cadre doré comportant une écriture kufique déclinant le nom de la sourate et le
nombre de ses versets. L’écriture noire est en graphie maghrébine. Elle se
distingue par des lettres arrondies ne respectant pas les normes
paléographiques fixes. Les signes orthographiques sont notés selon la méthode
développée par al-Khâlil ibn Ahmad. Les voyelles sont marquées en rouge. Le sukun est indiqué par un cercle bleu, la shaddah est bleue. La hamza et
la hamzat al-wasl sont respectivement indiquées par un point jaune et un
point vert, conformément à une graphie attestée dans les corans maghrébins
depuis au moins le Xe siècle.
La fin du verset est marquée par une rosace dorée trilobée alors que le dixième
verset est signalé par un cercle doré entouré de points équidistants.
Ce coran présente un prototype de l'écriture maghrébine, qui fut en vogue au Maghreb et en Espagne à partir du XIIe siècle. L'écriture, la dorure, l'enluminure, la marque des voyelles, la division en versets présentent une analogie frappante avec d'autres corans rédigés au Maroc, en Algérie ou en Andalousie, reflétant ainsi l'unité intellectuelle de cette aire géographique à partir de l'époque almohade[1]. Remarquons que, contrairement au début de l'époque almohade où les corans étaient de format « à l’italienne », les maghrébins vont opter vers la fin de cette période pour le format « à la française », qui se perpétuera jusqu'à l'époque contemporaine. La décoration des titres de la sourate, tout en s'inspirant des corans maghrébins de l’époque, conserve une certaine parenté décorative avec le répertoire des corans des IXe-XIe siècles. Il s’en distingue cependant par l’utilisation de motifs floraux élaborés et élégants inspirés du répertoire décoratif hispano-mauresque. Les titres des corans maghrébins étaient aussi ornés que ceux des corans orientaux contemporains d’Égypte mamluke.
