Cette jarre à panse ovoïde sur base plate, à col cylindrique bordé d’une lèvre éversée, est munie de deux anses.
Sur la surface blanche est tracé un décor en vert, brun et jaune. Le centre du col est ceint d’un bandeau constitué de motifs informels, rappelant vaguement des épigraphies disposées tête-bêche. Deux frises superposées sont placées sur l’épaule : l’une est constituée de chevrons bruns et la deuxième est composée de pétales alternativement verts et jaunes. La surface de la panse est décorée d’un félidé jaune à robe tachetée passant vers la gauche. Sur son dos s’étale une crinière dentelée assez dense. Sur le même champ est dessinée une palmette meublée d’écailles alternativement vertes et jaunes. Cette jarre est l’œuvre des ateliers d’al-Qallaline, connus à l’époque ottomane pour leur production de carreaux et d’une large variété de récipients aux formes ouvertes et fermées. La production de ces ateliers inaugure l’usage d’un nouveau style, qui se distingue de l’époque hafside par l’utilisation d’une gamme de couleurs plus riche et de thèmes décoratifs plus libres où dominent la flore et la géométrie. Les motifs animaliers sont incarnés par des félins, des oiseaux ou des poissons et semblent être limités aux pièces les plus tardives. Le plus souvent, carreaux et récipients s’ornent d’un ou plusieurs félins, au corps de profil et au regard perçant, comme c’est le cas pour cette jarre[1].
Le profil de ce récipient, qui porte le nom de « charbiya », s'apparente à celui de la « qolla », mais le col est plus haut et la panse moins ventrue. Il servait à conserver l'eau. Très en vogue en Ifriqiya et dans tout le Maghreb, la charbiya perpétue des modèles anciens qui existaient déjà à Raqqada à l'époque aghlabide[2], au Maghreb, et en Espagne[3], n'est pas sans nous rappeler les petites amphores en terre sigillée d’époque romaine. Les coloris vert, brun et jaune reprennent les couleurs de la céramique aghlabide. Si le décor géométrique et floral évoque des céramiques marocaine et algérienne contemporaines, le style caricatural du félin est très caractéristique de la céramique tunisoise de Qallaline, et diffère de celui des félins représentés sur des plats du royaume d'Aragon et de Catalogne[4].
