The al-Jami al-Sahih book (the authentic book) is a work in which are compiled 2762 hadith (sayings and deeds) of the Prophet, sorted by topics into 97 chapters. The authenticity is validated by the mention of their chain of transmission. Written by Mohammed al Bukharî (died 870) and commented by Al-Qastallani (died 1517), it is considered one of the six most important works of hadith in the Islamic Sunni world. It was particularly venerated.
This copy comprises seven volumes. The Maghrebin script is very elegant. The beginning and end of each volume is adorned with sarloh bearing geometric and floral ornamentation within a frame made up of two ribbons that intersect to form elongated hexagonal cartouches and four-pointed stars in the corners. The circular margin motif is adorned with interlaced palmettes and fleurons.
It is basically from the Ottoman period that the ornamentation of books of hadith was inspired by those in Qurans. The botanical motifs used (bifid fleurons, flourishes) are present during the same period throughout the Ottoman world, and are by all means not limited to the hadith works[1].
The decorative repertoire of this example is characteristic of the Maghrebin productions, whose palette was enriched in the eighteenth century; to blue, red and gold were added other colours such as green. The margin motifs call to mind the medallions that adorn the frontispieces of ninth-eleventh century Qurans, but are directly inspired by the Hispano-Moorish and Ottoman decorative repertoire of the thirteenth-fourteenth century.
