Le livre al-Jami al-Sahih (le recueil authentique) est un ouvrage dans lequel sont réunis 2762 hadith (dits et gestes) du Prophète, classés par sujets en 97 chapitres. Leur authenticité est validée par la mention de leur chaîne de transmission. Rédigé par Mohammed al Bukharî (m. 870) et commenté par al-Qastallani (m. 1517), il est considéré parmi les six plus importants ouvrages de hadith du monde islamique sunnite. Il fut l'objet d'une vénération particulière.
Cet exemplaire est constitué de sept volumes. La graphie, maghrébine, est très élégante. Le début et la fin de chaque volume s’orne de sarloh à décor géométrique et floral contenu dans un cadre constitué de deux rubans qui se croisent formant des cartouches allongés hexagonaux et des étoiles à quatre branches dans les angles. Le motif marginal circulaire est meublé de palmettes et fleurons entrelacés.
C'est essentiellement à partir de l'époque ottomane que l'ornementation des livres de hadith s’inspira de celle des corans. Les motifs végétaux utilisés (fleurons bifides, rinceaux) sont présents à la même époque dans l'ensemble du monde ottoman, et ne se limitent guère aux ouvrages de hadith[1].
Le répertoire décoratif de cet exemplaire est caractéristique des productions maghrébines, dont la palette s'est enrichie au XVIIIe siècle: au bleu, au rouge et à l'or se sont ajoutées d'autres couleurs comme le vert. Les motifs marginaux rappellent les médaillons ornant les frontispices des corans des IXe-XIe siècles, mais s'inspirent directement du répertoire décoratif hispano-mauresque et ottoman du XIIIe-XIVe siècle.
