À la fin du VIe et au début du VIIe siècle, quatre églises furent édifiées sur les terres jouxtant la rue romaine bordée de colonnades qui traverse d’est en ouest le centre de Madaba. Ces terres sont aujourd’hui entourées par un parc archéologique. Dominant la ville, ces églises ont non seulement modifié le tissu urbain de Madaba, mais ont aussi contribué à la formulation de l’identité chrétienne de la ville.
L’église de la Vierge Marie fut édifiée au nord de la rue romaine, sur un emplacement de choix. Elle présente une nef de plan circulaire et une abside allongée soutenue par deux voûtes en berceau souterraines.
La mosaïque qui décore actuellement le sol de l’église date de l’an 662, selon l’ère de la création, « Creatio Mundi ». Elle consiste en trois cercles concentriques à l’intérieur d’un grand carré composé d'entrelacs. Le médaillon central comporte une inscription en grec rappelant au fidèle qui entre dans l’église la pureté spirituelle nécessaire à l’adoration de l’icône de la Vierge Marie. La mosaïque au sol se compose exclusivement de motifs géométriques et floraux, comprenant deux images représentant un fruit et un couteau dans une coupe sur pieds. Ce motif est repris et élevé au rang de motif essentiel à Khirbat al-Mafjar, complexe palatial à proximité de Jéricho, où il occupe le sol de l’abside centrale. L’inscription indique qu’une icône de la Vierge s'y trouvait. Une autre inscription de huit lignes placée à l’intérieur d’une tabula anseata, devant le jubé, nous apprend que l’église fut reconstruite et béatifiée par le « soin et le zèle du Christ dans son amour pour le peuple de Madaba », en l’année correspondant à 662 après J.-C.
L’intérêt de cette mosaïque réside dans sa date : il s’agit du dernier sol en mosaïque réalisé en Jordanie. Cela prouve que cent trente-deux ans après la chute de la dynastie omeyyade, il existait toujours à Madaba une communauté chrétienne suffisamment prospère pour reconstruire une église et l’orner d’un sol en mosaïque colorée.
