Cette tour servait à contrôler l'entrée est de la ville de Karak et à en renforcer l’enceinte. Elle est réalisée avec une pierre calcaire locale et des pierres de couleur rouge dans le parement et les soubassements. Comme dans les châteaux croisés ou musulmans de la région, les pierres sont soit polies soit en bossage et, dans les soubassements, appareillées en carreaux et boutisses.
La tour est située à 118 km au sud d'Amman et domine la vallée, un emplacement qui lui permet de contrôler toutes les routes menant à l'entrée est de la ville. De forme semi-circulaire, elle comporte trois niveaux. L'entrée originelle, située au nord, est close en raison de l’ajout moderne de bâtiments. Elle conduisait, via un couloir étroit, à un escalier en pierre menant au rez-de-chaussée, lequel comprend trois chambres carrées ou rectangulaires autour d’une pièce centrale voutée d’arêtes. Dans chaque chambre était aménagée une archère. L'une d’entre elles disposait également d’un puits. Au premier étage de la tour, accessible depuis le rez-de-chaussée grâce à un escalier en pierre, un couloir étroit conduit à une salle rectangulaire sans ouvertures ; la disposition des pièces est similaire à celle du rez-de-chaussée. La salle principale carrée est couverte d’une coupole à pendentifs ouverte au sommet par un oculus, pour la lumière et la ventilation. Des archères sont réparties dans les chambres donnant sur le hall principal. Le troisième étage de la tour est une terrasse ceinte d'un mur de protection, offrant une large vision et un accès aux murs d’enceinte par trois marches.
Le décor comprend une inscription de fondation en calligraphie thuluth et des sculptures en fort relief de lions ou de panthères, emblème du sultan Baybars que l’on retrouve sur nombre de ses réalisations, comme la tour ronde de Baybars au Krak des Chevaliers (1271), la Bâb Sittî Maryam de Jérusalem ou encore, au Caire, le Pont des lions.
La conception de la tour a été influencée par la topographie et le climat. La tour est similaire par son plan à celles de la forteresse al-Jabal au Caire (1176) et du fort d'Aqaba (1219). Ce plan s’est ensuite poursuivi dans l'Est de la Jordanie, par exemple à la forteresse de Shawbak (1296 – 1308), dans les forts de la route égyptienne du pèlerinage comme ceux d’Alaznm (1538) et d’al-Wajh (1703).
