This glass, spindle-shaped lampshade is composed of a central bulbous cylinder, the rim of which forms a support in the lower section. The external surface is decorated with gilt engraving in three registers outlined by bands. The upper and lower registers contain a garland of lozenges that enclose miniature six-petalled flowers. The angles are punctuated by sequins that alternate with a large circular flower, edged with beads, from which palmettes unfurl in long tapering, feathery stems. The middle register contains miniature four-petalled flowers.
The technique employed here has close associations with Bohemian glasswork, which was very sought after in the Ottoman world. The Ottoman’s borrowed the technique in their Beykos workshops on the banks of the Bosphorus.
These glassworks with their highly refined ornamentation, often applied to softly tinted glass, gained great success beginning in the 18th century and spread all the way from the Mediterranean to Iran. No longer in vogue today, specimens of such works can still be found in private homes and in museum collections, like the one from Barbados, similar to this one from the Algiers’ museum. This object used to belong to a planter and wealthy merchant in 1880[1].
