This square incense-burner stays on a lower part formed as four bulky projections in the corners, having the shape of an X. The handle has a square section and was added to the censer separately.
The decoration consists of applied motifs such as three curved projections reaching above the edge. These as well as the sides are pierced with one or two rows of dots.
The piece is unique. It has been found in one of the domestic structures around the Umayyad complex on Jabal al-Qal‘ah in Amman. The structure could have been related to one house interpreted as belonging to the imâm of the mosque located nearby. Even rather roughly done, it belongs to a large set of incense-burner of the same date, in different mediums, from Spain to east Iran.
In the Umayyad period Amman was the capital of the Balqa Province. As today, the main Umayyad occupation concentrated in the valley west of Jabal Al-Qal‘ah. The Jabal has been chosen by Umayyad rulers as their residence, probably in order to make use of earlier remains. The complex includes administrative and residential quarters, in addition to a mosque, market and bath. The most prominent feature of the administrative quarter (Dar Al-Imarah) is the great audience hall reached through an arched entrance and a courtyard.
