Parmi les nombreuses techniques utilisées pour le décor des céramiques d’époque abbasside, le décor incisé est remarquable par sa finesse et sa sobriété.
Habituellement montées au tour, les pièces destinées à recevoir un décor champlevé se distinguent par des parois relativement épaisses, permettant au potier d’utiliser un outil contendant tel que le couteau pour ôter des morceaux de pâte avant que celle-ci ne se dessèche. Ce genre de décor confère profondeur et tridimensionnalité aux pièces.
Le récipient présenté ici appartient à une collection originaire de la ville de Mahis, à l’ouest d’Amman. Il n’a pas été trouvé en fouilles. Le récipient comporte quatre pieds. Il est fabriqué avec une pâte grise, épaisse, facilitant le découpage de morceaux afin de l’utiliser pour les décors que nous voyons sur la surface externe de l’objet.
Après la mise en forme de l’objet, le potier a effectué des décorations sur la surface extérieure en la divisant en cinq registres. Le premier, le troisième et le cinquième en forme de petits triangles découpés d’une façon régulière pour l’ensemble des parties.
Concernant la deuxième et la quatrième partie, l’artiste (potier) a effectué des coupes en forme de zigzag avec des angles aigus donnant l’impression de triangles isocèles se rejoignant aux deux extrémités de la base du triangle. Il dessine entre les deux côtés de chaque triangle un motif en creux en harmonie avec la succession des côtés. Ce genre de poterie était répandu en Jordanie, Palestine et Syrie et d’une manière remarquable et dans tous les sites datant de la période abbasside.
La plupart des musées en Jordanie, qu’ils soient à Irbid, Amman ou l’université de Yermouk, possèdent des exemples de ce genre de poterie.
La décoration en triangles est la plus répandue dans l’art islamique. Nous la trouvons par exemple dans les mosaïques de sol des palais de Qastal et Amra, également dans les peintures (à l’eau) du palais de Amra, et la façade extérieure du palais de Mshatta. Ajouté à cela un grand nombre de palais de Syrie et Khirbat al-Mafjar à Ariha (Jéricho ?). Nous trouvons également ce genre d’objet dans les sites abbassides à Sumer, Hadar, Ukhaydir. On a continué à les trouver aux époques ayyubide, mamluke et ottomane.
