This painted wooden panel belonged to a wood-panelled ceiling in a palace in Barcelona. Its peculiarity lies in the dynamism and vivacity of the painting, which give an effect of relief compared with the other panels in the set. It shows a chase scene with a Muslim horseman and two Christian riders against a wooded background. The narrative talent of the artist and the realism of the composition, have led researchers to suggest that this painting is part of a historical chronicle.
The Muslim horseman is wearing a turban but no armour and is carrying a shield decorated with a tortoise. In certain cases this animal symbolises nobility. The horseman, confident in his own ability, facing down the enemy, waits for the last moment before riding away. His horse is more nimble than those of his pursuers and his stirrups are much shorter.
His adversaries are wearing chain mail and helmets and are carrying shields with different heraldic emblems. Their horses a also wearing armour. This detail corresponds to the reality of the times, when the Arab horsemen were much more lightly equipped than their Christian counterparts.
The Gothic style of this panel is in line with the style of similar objects from the end of the thirteenth century and the beginning of the fourteenth century, a period during which a taste for this type of painting developed in Catalonia. The Catalonia National Museum of Art displays several panels showing fighting between Muslims and Christians. The style and the subject also recall certain mural paintings from the Aguilar palace I the Calle Montcada, showing episodes from the 1229 conquest of Majorca by James I of Aragon.
