Ce panneau de bois peint appartient à un plafond à caisson d’un palais de Barcelone. Il se caractérise par le dynamisme et la vivacité de son décor, qui le mettent en relief par rapport aux autres panneaux composant l’ensemble. Il présente une scène de poursuite entre un cavalier musulman et deux chevaliers chrétiens sur un fond de paysage arboré. Dans ce type de peintures, le talent narratif de l’artiste ainsi que le réalisme de la composition permettent de supposer que cette scène fait partie d’une chronique historique.
Le cavalier musulman muni d’un bouclier sur lequel est représenté une tortue porte un turban mais aucune armure. Cet animal symbolise dans certains cas la noblesse, le chevalier qui se retire tard du combat, faisant face à l’ennemi jusqu’au dernier moment, confiant en propre sa force. Il chevauche une monture beaucoup plus leste que celle des chevaliers chrétiens et une selle à étriers chaussés courts.
Ses adversaires, en heaume et cottes de maille, portent deux boucliers différents sur lesquels on peut voir des emblèmes héraldiques. Leurs chevaux sont beaucoup plus caparaçonnés que celui du Musulman ; ce détail correspond à une réalité, les harnachements et l’armement des chevaux arabes étant plus légers qu’en Occident.
De style gothique, ce plafond se place dans la continuité stylistique d’autres œuvres similaires réalisées à la fin du XIIIe siècle et au début du XIVe, période où le goût pour ce type d’éléments picturaux se développe dans les palais catalans. Le Musée National d’Art de Catalogne possède quelques panneaux sur lesquels on retrouve des scènes de combats entre Musulmans et Chrétiens. Le style et la thématique ne sont pas sans évoquer certaines peintures murales situées à l’origine dans le Palais Aguilar de la rue Montcada, et qui relatent des épisodes datant de 1229 lors de la conquête de Mallorca par Jacques Ier.
