Esta pieza es un magnífico ejemplo de cerámica de cuerda seca total, técnica muy representada entre los objetos descubiertos en excavaciones y utilizados en Mértola en el siglo XII. La cuerda seca, bajo su variante parcial, ya está documentada en al-Andalus en el siglo X. Esta técnica fue importada de Oriente, en la misma época que la decoración vidriada polícroma denominada “verde y manganeso”. Consiste en realizar sobre la superficie de la pieza, con ayuda de óxido de manganeso mezclado con una materia grasa, una serie de compartimentos, en cuyo interior se depositan óxidos colorantes. Gracias a este método los distintos colores se delimitan perfectamente durante la cocción. Al cocerse la mezcla de óxido de manganeso se evapora, dejando sobre la pieza un fino trazo negro.
Este plato troncocónico de colores blancos, verdes y amarillos presenta un borde biselado. En el borde inferior se desarrolla una decoración de palmetas; en el centro tiene un motivo zoomorfo, un corzo o un antílope en posición estática. Este motivo es mucho menos frecuente que otros animales, como los pájaros o los leones.
El vidriado de esta pieza, bien conservado, guarda el brillo de sus colores de origen; el dibujo, de gran precisión, también tiene motivos vegetales.
Algunos platos con motivos figurativos de antílopes han sido descubiertos en las excavaciones de Sabra (Ifriqiya)[1]. Por otra parte, en la misma alcazaba de Mértola encontramos otra zafa[2] con escena de caza de los siglos XI-XII, de rasgos mucho más estilizados; se ignora su origen, aunque una de las hipótesis más probable es que viniera de Ifrîqiya.
