Cette pièce est un magnifique exemple de céramique à décor de cuerda seca totale, technique très bien représentée parmi les objets découverts en fouille et utilisés à Mértola au XIIe siècle.
La cuerda seca, sous sa variante partielle, est déjà attestée en al-Andalus au Xe siècle. Cette technique a été importée d’Orient, en même temps que le décor glaçuré polychrome appelé « vert et brun ». Elle consiste à dessiner sur la surface de la pièce, à l’aide d’oxyde de manganèse mélangé à une matière grasse, une série de compartiments à l’intérieur desquels sont déposés des glaçures colorés. Grâce à cette méthode, les différentes couleurs sont parfaitement délimitées à l’issue de la cuisson. En cuisant, le mélange à base d’oxyde de manganèse s’évapore pour ne laisser sur la pièce qu’un mince trait noir.
Ce plat tronconique aux couleurs blanches, verts et jaunes présente une lèvre en biseau. Sur le bord intérieur se déroulent des palmettes ; au centre, un motif zoomorphe figure un chevreuil ou une antilope en position statique. Ce motif est beaucoup moins fréquent que d’autres d’animaux comme les oiseaux ou les lions.
Les glaçures de cette pièce, bien conservées, ont gardé l’éclat de leurs couleurs d’origine; le dessin, d’une grande précision, comporte aussi des motifs végétaux.
Quelques plats à motif d’antilope ont aussi été découverts lors des fouilles de Sabra (Ifrîqiya)[1]. Par ailleurs, un autre plat attribué au XIe-XIIe siècle découvert dans l’Alcazaba du Castelo de Mértola[2]
présente une scène de chasse où figure aussi une antilope, dont les traits sont beaucoup plus stylisés ; on ignore sa provenance, l’Ifrîqiya a été une des premières hypothèses avancées.
