En el tercer capítulo de su tratado, al-Jazarî plantea la cuestión de los autómatas utilizados para el aseo o los tratamientos. Este folio representa un autómata destinado a medir la cantidad de sangre extraída durante una sangría. El funcionamiento de esta máquina se basa en el principio de los cuerpos flotantes que transmiten un movimiento: un líquido que se derrama en un recipiente hace subir el flotador, lo que provoca el descenso de un contrapeso que permite medir la cantidad de sangre vertida.
La pintura muestra con gran detalle el mecanismo de esta ingeniosa máquina. En la parte inferior hay dos zonas, una en la que la sangre se recoge en un amplio recipiente y donde se conecta un flotador rojo, mediante un sistema de polea, a un contrapeso azul situado en la parte anexa. Encima, dos autómatas sentados indican la cantidad de sangre vertida, y un tercero aparece en un nicho.
Bajo el color se distingue un dibujo preliminar. Los colores lisos fueron aplicados después, antes de volver a repasar los detalles. La precisión de los elementos técnicos, pero también la de los motivos decorativos, atestigua la calidad pictórica de esta copia, cuyas pinturas muestran una influencia estilística bizantina. Esta precisión es visible en el nicho con fondo rojo ocupado por el personaje que domina la escena, y en los pliegues de su vestido. El motivo decorativo que adorna la parte inferior del autómata y el medallón vegetal que encontramos en la mayoría de las pinturas, evocan más bien el mundo anatolio y turco.
La idea del cuerpo y de la medicina en el mundo musulmán está basada en los conceptos heredados de la antigua Grecia. El gran número de traducciones de textos griegos en árabe desde el siglo IX [1] posibilitó la apropiación y desarrollo de los conocimientos antiguos y la aparición de grandes eruditos musulmanes como Ibn Sina [2] o Ibn Rushd[3], cuya suma de conocimientos científicos, filosóficos y literarios fue transmitida al Occidente medieval del siglo XII a través de las traducciones de textos árabes en latín y a menudo en hebreo. La sangría, herencia del mundo antiguo, se practicó sin interrupción tanto en Oriente como en Occidente, hasta la época moderna.
