Pinos Puente caliphal bridge

This bridge built of stone on rock foundations, which have undoubtedly contributed to its survival, has three arches. The central arch has the greatest span. This radial arch is sits on imposts and its roof is held in place by one metre long dowels, which are fixed in position by crampons.
The pillars supporting the bridge are rounded facing the current of the river and flat on the opposite side. The bridge is built of dressed sandstone arranged in alternating header and stretcher blocks. On one of the pillars sits a chapel, which was constructed to replace a defensive tower.
The Pinos Puente bridge is constructed in a similar fashion to the extension of the ‘Abd al-Rahman II Mosque in Cordoba; the presence of radial dowels and the absence of horizontal voussoirs in the lower section lead us to believe it was constructed at a later date. Torres Balbas found another similar example in the extension of the al-Hakam mosque in Cordoba.
