Orla: Este dinar fue acuñado en la ciudad de Toledo en el año mil doscientos veintidós [¿?] de safar.
Esta moneda cristiana inscrita en árabe fue acuñada por el rey Alfonso VIII siguiendo el modelo de las monedas almorávides. Este tipo de dinar es conocido como “maravedí de Alfonso” o “morabetino”. Se trata de una reproducción fiel de las monedas almorávides, tanto desde el punto de vista del peso, de la ley y de la forma, aunque “traducida” al cristianismo. Alfonso VIII, al igual que sus predecesores, no acuñó moneda de oro, la única moneda de oro acuñada en su nombre es copia de los dinares almorávides.
De este modo, en el anverso, en la leyenda central, en lugar de la leyenda almorávide en la que se nombraba al califa abbasí, se menciona al papa romano. En la orla del anverso, mientras que las monedas almorávides contienen algún fragmento del Corán, como la aleya 85 de la sura III: “Si alguien desea una religión diferente del Islam no se le aceptará y en la otra vida será de los que pierdan”, el morabetino incluye el versículo 16 del capítulo XVI del Evangelio de San Marcos. En cuanto al reverso, en la leyenda central Alfonso VIII se hace llamar “príncipe de los católicos”, al igual que el soberano almorávide se hace llamar “príncipe de los musulmanes”. La leyenda de la orla es prácticamente igual en los dos tipos de monedas; ambas contienen la zeca y la fecha, aunque en el caso del morabetino la fecha en lugar de seguir el cómputo de la Hégira sigue la Era española, conocida por los judíos con el nombre de Safar, que tenía 38 años más que la Era cristiana.
