Sur le pourtour :
ضرب هذا الدينار بمدينة طليطلة سنة إثنتين وعشرين ومائتين وألف للصفر
(« Ce dinar a été frappé dans la ville de Tolède en l’an mil deux cent vingt deux ( ?)de safar »).
Cette monnaie chrétienne inscrite en arabe fut frappée par le roi Alphonse VIII, suivant le modèle des monnaies almoravides. On nomme ce type de dinar un « maravedí d’Alphonse ». Cette pièce est une reproduction fidèle, aussi bien du point de vue du poids, que de l’aloi et de la forme, des monnaies almoravides, mais elle a fait l’objet d’une « traduction » chrétienne. Alphonse VIII, tout comme ses prédécesseurs, ne frappa pas de monnaie en or, la seule qui le fut en son nom est cette « copie » des dinars almoravides.
Le texte est similaire à celui des monnaies almoravides, mais adaptée au christianisme. C’est ainsi que sur l’avers, au centre de la pièce, en lieu et place de l’inscription almoravide qui mentionne le calife abbasside, on trouve une allusion au pape romain. Sur le pourtour de l’avers alors que l’on trouve sur les monnaies almoravides un fragment du Coran, comme le verset 85 de la sourate III : « Si quelqu’un désire une autre religion que l’islam, on ne l’acceptera pas, et dans l’autre vie, il fera partie des perdants » ; on trouve à sa place, sur le maravedí, le verset 16 du chapitre XVI de l’Évangile de saint Marc. Sur le revers, au centre, Alphonse VIII se fait appeler le « prince des catholiques », tout comme le souverain almoravide se fait nommer « l’émir des musulmans ».
La légende du pourtour est pratiquement identique sur les deux types de monnaies ; elles contiennent toutes deux la mention du lieu de frappe et la date, mais dans le cas des maravedí, la date suit le comput de l’ère espagnole au lieu de celui de l’Hégire ; ce comput, appelé par les juifs safar est de 38 ans en avance sur le calendrier chrétien.
