Cette coupe lobée en verre turquoise opaque est unique par la couleur et la taille de relief pour ce type d’objets. Il est possible qu’elle ait été réalisée en Iran ou en Irak aux IXe-Xe siècles, époque à laquelle les techniques de la gravure à la roue et de la gravure à la pointe et du verre poli sont très utilisées dans les pays islamiques. Nous ignorons comment cette coupe est arrivée dans le trésor de Saint-Marc de Venise. Selon la tradition, la coupe aurait été offerte par le shah de Perse à la Signoria de Venise en 1472.
Chacun des cinq lobes de la coupe est décoré d’un lièvre en mouvement placé dans un compartiment délimité par une ligne continue en relief qui se termine à la partie inférieure de la coupe en forme d’écusson. Les lièvres sont gravés à la pointe et en haut relief alors qu’en-dessous du bord on trouve des palmettes et autres ornements également gravés.
A l’intérieur de la coupe, cinq bandes d’or séparant les lobes de la coupe sont décorées de rinceaux stylisés et de palmettes en léger relief qui sont très proches stylistiquement de ceux du pied du calice à deux anses de Romain II également conservé au trésor de Saint-Marc, tous deux sont datés du Xe siècle.
Sur le bord de la coupe est fixée une monture magnifiquement exécutée en argent doré et ornée de cinq plaques émaillées à décor floral. Ces plaques semblent être byzantines, probablement du XIe-XIIe siècle, et remployées pour décorer la coupe du trésor de Saint-Marc. Elles sont séparées entre elles par des panneaux filigranés finement exécutés et décorés de pierres précieuses. Ces derniers d’origine occidentale ont certainement été ajoutés en même temps que les plaques en émail après l’arrivée de cette coupe à Venise, probablement au XVe siècle.
Sur le pied annulaire court une inscription en caractères coufiques du IXe-Xe siècle que l’on traduit par khorassan qui désigne une région mal définie de l’Iran oriental connue pour sa production de turquoises. Cependant, une comparaison stylistique avec le décor d’un fragment de verre clair gravé à la roue, provenant de Samarra et datant du IXe siècle, permet de supposer que la ville de Samarra pourrait également être le lieu de production potentiel de la coupe du trésor de Saint-Marc. Des fouilles ont prouvé qu’à Samarra, capitale abbasside, en Irak ou à Nishapur, en Iran oriental, ont été réalisés plusieurs d’objets luxueux du même type que la coupe en verre turquoise.
