Cette maison est l’un des rares exemples encore conservés d’habitation nasride, située dans une allée ou une impasse, typique de la ville arabe médiévale. L’habitation, qui occupe un terrain triangulaire est orientée nord-sud. Comme la plupart des maisons arabes on y avait accès par deux entrées, l’une menant à la partie comprenant les écuries et les magasins, l’autre menant à la cour, par une entrée surmontée d’un arc brisé.
La maison s’organise autour d’une cour centrale légèrement trapézoïdale dans laquelle il y avait un bassin triangulaire – aujourd’hui disparu – orné d’éléments en céramique glaçurée. Sur l’une des façades à arcade de la cour s’ouvre un portail élancé à trois ouvertures, aux fines colonnes de brique. C’est par là que l’on accédait à la salle principale. Elle fait face à une tonnelle, ou salon d’été, avec cinq arcs séparés par des colonnes. Ces arcs, comme souvent dans les habitations nasrides, n’avaient pas de fonction architectonique.
On trouve des portails similaires à Darabenaz dans la plaine de Grenade (XIIIe siècle) et dans le palais aujourd’hui disparu de Cetti-Meriem à Grenade (XVe siècle), et ailleurs à Grenade. D’autres portails à colonnes semblables furent construits dans la Dâr al-Jund (Madinat al-Zahra, au Xe siècle) et dans l’ensemble urbain inhabité de Madinat Siyasa (Cieza, Murcie, XII-XIIIe siècle).
Au XVe siècle, afin d’augmenter sa superficie, une galerie fut construite au-dessus du portail nord, permettant d’accéder à une nouvelle salle à l’étage. Par la suite, au XVIIe siècle, lors de la restructuration de la Carrera del Darro, la maison fit l’objet d’autres transformations. En 1888, cette maison nasride, qui était déjà mentionnée dans le Bulletin 33 du Centre artistique par D. Manuel Gómez Moreno, fut déclarée « d’exceptionnelle importance […] une maison unanimement reconnue comme authentiquement arabe […] qui peut être considérée comme le paradigme des maison arabes ». Cependant, en 1910, son entrée d’origine fut modifiée. En 1982 son actuel propriétaire, l’architecte Carlos Sánchez, entreprit une minutieuse et remarquable intervention pour mettre en valeur son plan d’origine. Ce processus de restauration avait pour objectif premier de récupérer la typologie andalouse, en conservant et restaurant tous les éléments originels qui s’y trouvaient.
Aujourd’hui, à Grenade, elle constitue la seule maison nasride qui continue à être habitée, et ce malgré les 600 ans écoulés depuis sa construction.
