Nasrid House

This house is a rare example of a well-preserved Nasrid dwelling. It is situated in a dead-end alley typical of a medieval Arab town. The house occupies a triangular plot of land and has a north-south orientation. Like most Arab houses, it has two entrances: one leading from the stables and storerooms and the other passing through a horseshoe arch into the courtyard.
The house is organized around a trapezoid interior courtyard in which there was a triangular pool – which today no longer exists – decorated with glazed ceramic elements. On one of the façades of arcade around the courtyard, a slender gateway having three openings with fine brick columns leads to the main room. Opposite to this, there is an arbour or summer room with five arches separated by columns. As with many Nasrid houses, these arches have no architectonic use.
Similar gateways are found at Darabenaz on the Granada plain (13th century) and in the Cetti-Merien palace in Granada (15th century), which today no longer exists.
Similar gateways with columns were also constructed in the Dâr al-Jund (Madinat al-Zahra, in the 10th century) as well as in the inhabited urban ensemble of Madinat Siyasa (Cieza, Murcia, 12th- 13th centuries).
In the 15th century in order to increase the surface area, a gallery was constructed above the north gateway, which allowed access to a new room on the first floor. The house was further transformed in the 17th century during the restructuring of the Carrera del Darro. In 1888, this house, which had already been mentioned in Bulletin 33 of the Artistic Centre by D. Manuel Gomez Moreno, was declared as being “of exceptional importance […] a house, which is universally recognised as being authentically Arab […] and which may be considered as a paradigm of Arab houses. In 1910 however, its original entrance was modified. In 1982, its present owner the architect Carlos Sanchez set about a remarkable meticulous plan to restore the house to its original specifications. The aim of this plan was to recover its Andalusian typology by carefully restoring all the original elements of the house.
Today this house is the only remaining inhabited Nasrid residence in Granada, and this despite the 600 years that have passed since its construction.
