Declared a national monument in 1885. Numerous restorations, particularly by J. Fernandez in 1899 and Rodriguez Cano in 1931.
The synagogue was built by craftsmen under the direction of Ishāq Moheb in 1315. Located in the Calle de los Judíos (street of the Jews), this modest building was constructed during the reign of Alfonso XI of Castille and is the only surviving synagogue in Andalusia. This small synagogue comprises a courtyard that is directly accessible from the street. This courtyard or hall, in which there stood an ablutions basin, was commonly placed in front of the entrance to the prayer room.
The almost square oratory is covered with a wooden ceiling decorated with knotwork. Under an arch is the hekhal in which the Torah was kept, wrapped in cloth and placed in a case. On the east side, a stairway leads to the women's gallery with its three balconies.
The synagogue is built mainly from brick and some of its carved plaster decorations with Mudéjar motifs have survived to this day. In some places it's missing important pieces. Vegetal motifs and four-, six-, and eight-pointed stars are alternated with inscriptions, including passages from the Book of Solomon.
For many centuries there were large communities of Jews in Spain. Many were famous, such as those in the cities of Toledo, Barcelona, Girona, Zaragoza, Tudela, Sevilla, Córdoba, and Lucena. There was continual Jewish presence in Spanish society up until 1492, when the Catholic royal family signed the Edict of Expulsion.
Following the expulsion of the Jews, many of their buildings were reused. This building in Córdoba was first used as a hydrophobic hospital, a Catholic chapel for shoemakers (the Chapel of Saints Crispin and Ciprianus) and, finally, a nursery school until 1885. In that year, it was declared a national monument thanks to work carried out by a priest named don Mariano Párraga, who discovered the original carved plaster decorations.
The synagogue, together with that of Santa-Maria-la-Blanca and the Synagogue of El Transito is one of the most important historical monuments in Spain.
