1885 : déclaré Monument National. Restaurations nombreuses, notamment celles de J. Fernandez en 1899 et de Rodriguez Cano en 1931.
Cette synagogue fut construite par des artisans sous la direction de Is’hâq Moheb en 1315. Située dans la rue Judios (des juifs), ce modeste édifice fut construit sous le règne de Alphonse XI de Castille et constitue la seule synagogue conservée en Andalousie. De petites dimensions, elle comprend une cour a laquelle on accède directement par la rue. Cette cour, ou vestibule, dans laquelle il y avait un bassin destiné aux ablutions est habituelle avant l’entrée de la salle de prière.
L’oratoire, presque carré, est couvert d’un plafond en bois à décor de caissons ornés d’entrelacs. Placé sous un arc, se trouve le hekhal dans lequel était conservée la Torah, enveloppée d’étoffes et placée dans des étuis. Sur le côté est, un escalier permet d’accéder à la galerie des femmes, dotée de trois petits balcons.
Cette synagogue, dont le matériau de base est la brique, a conservé jusqu’à aujourd’hui une partie de son décor en plâtre sculpté aux motifs mudéjars. En certains endroits il en manque des fragments importants. Des motifs végétaux et des étoiles à quatre, six ou huit branches alternent avec des inscriptions, dont des passages du Livre de Salomon.
Pendant des siècles de nombreuses communautés juives ont vécues en Espagne. Certaines étaient renommées, comme dans les villes de Tolède, Barcelone, Gérone, Saragosse, Tudela, Séville, Cordoue ou Lucena. La présence juive dans la société espagnole a été une constante et une référence quotidienne jusqu’à ce qu’en 1492 les Rois catholiques signent l’édit d’expulsion des Juifs.
À la suite de leur expulsion, un grand nombre de leurs constructions furent remployées. Cet édifice cordouan devint successivement l’hôpital des hydrophobes de Sainte-Quitterie, l’Ermitage de Saint-Crépin de la congrégation des cordonniers et enfin une école maternelle jusqu’en 1885. À cette date, il fut déclaré Monument National grâce à l’intérêt qu’y porta le curé Mariano Parraga qui découvrit le décor de plâtre sculpté.
Cette synagogue, avec celle de Santa-Maria-la-Blanca ou du Transito à Tolède est l’une des plus importantes d’Espagne.
