The Seville Arsenals

Together with the Giralda, the Torre del Oro and the Alcazar, the Arsenal is among the oldest examples of Seville’s architectural heritage.
Its construction was started in the same year as the Giralda. It is situated on what was probably the site of the old arsenal dating from the nineth century. When Seville fell to the Spaniards in the thirteenth century, king Alphonso attributed its completion to himself, as can be read on his tombstone kept at the Charity Hospice, situated in the grounds of the Arsenal.
The Arsenal backs onto the outside of the city fortifications between the Golden Tower and the Silver Tower, which gave it direct access to the river (no longer exists) and the munitions brought by boat.
As well as receiving ships arriving by the Guadalquivir, the Arsenal was also a shipbuilding yard and as such was a highly important socio-cultural element of the city’s life. It constituted the beginning of the Castilian navy, which later would discover the Americas and transform Seville into the most important Spanish port for arrivals and departures for the New World.
The design is very sober and is a striking example of Almohad influence on the medieval architecture of Seville. The structure was built perpendicular to the river in Gothico-Mudejar style and was composed of seventeen naves separated by ogival arches and covered by a Gothic vaulted roof in brick. The ceilings were probably made of wood and the roof covered in tiles, which would have given it the same shape as that of the Seville mosque. Today only seven of the original seventeen naves exist.
In the sixteenth century the structure was modified in order to accommodate the Great Customs House, where all goods coming from America were inventoried and the corresponding taxes paid. During the same period the Brotherhood of Charity was established in a part of the building, in order to provide burial for the drowned and the executed. During the following centuries the Arsenal was used for varying purposes such as the storage of artillery and vehicles etc.
Since 1993, the Arsenal has been the property of the Junta of Andalusia and has undergone several programmes of restoration associated with several cultural events. At the present time, a project exists to convert the structure into a permanent museum dedicated to the historic relationship between Spain and the Americas.
