Le réservoir, de forme globulaire aplatie, ceint d’une gouttière lisse, repose sur une base annulaire. Un col cylindrique s’évasant vers le haut, autrefois fermé par un couvercle dont seule subsiste la charnière, le surmonte. À la large poignée un peu oblique en forme de palmette ajourée s’oppose un long bec « en forme de nacelle ». Le réflecteur est couronné d’un oiseau stylisé, motif très courant sur les lampes et les brûle-parfums car associé, par son envol vers le ciel, à la lumière et au parfum.
Le décor s’ordonne en registres horizontaux sur le réservoir : un bandeau inscrit enserre l’épaule, un rinceau feuillu, la panse et le bec. Des registres verticaux enfermant des losanges estampés formant un réseau, enserrent le col.
Juan Zozaya considère que la forme aplatie du réservoir est typique des lampes à huile de l’époque du califat omeyyade de Cordoue. Cette pièce est semblable à une lampe à huile conservée par le Museo Arqueológico y Etnológico de Grenade[1] et à une autre pièce de l’Instituto Valencia de Don Juan[2].
Des lampes à huile appartenant à ce type formel étaient déjà utilisées dans le monde romain. Près de Grenade, sur le site de l’ancienne Madinat Ilbira détruite au début du XIe siècle, on a découvert une lampe à huile à deux becs en bronze qui porte une inscription en latin précédée d’une croix « oc opus Salomonis erat », interprétée comme une datation dans l’ère hispanique[3]. L’inscription serait l’œuvre d’un mozarabe. Le célèbre paon du Louvre[4] porte, en plus du nom de l’artisan, une inscription latine précédée elle aussi d’une croix : « Opus Salomonis eraT X ». Il a été démontré de façon convaincante que le TX est une date cryptée en ère d’Espagne, 1010 (TX) correspondant à 972.
