This vase is typical of recipients called jarrita, (a word that comes from the Arabic djarra, meaning ‘jug’), with a neck almost the same height as the body, and which is used as a drinking vase. The lack of glaze enables the water to evaporate, which then remains fresh. This piece, which has a certain number of cracks, sits on a foot-ring with a flattened spherical body with its two high oval handles and a tulip-shaped neck. The two handles that are attached to the body start on the lower part of the neck and are adorned with black parallel lines painted with manganese oxide. On the upper part of the cylindrical flanged neck there is a decoration of diagonal lines incised on the painted surface. The lower part of the neck bears a pseudo-epigraphic design painted in cursive letters—a motif that was frequent in the Arab world, and that can be seen from central Asia to Spain. The body is covered in brown-black decorative registers, separated by superposed horizontal bands.
During the twelfth century, painted and incised decorations became widespread in Al-Andalus productions, particularly those of the region of Murcia and Valencia. The Lixus piece has a stylistic shape and charcrateristics that relate it to productions of this type made in Andalusia from the Almohad era (1130–1269). The Al-Andalus productions could have been imported to the Maghrib, but we don’t know if a local production was developed in this region during the Marinid or Almohad eras (1196–1549).
