El minbar de la mezquita al-Qarawiyyîn es un pedido del sultán almorávide ‘Alî ibn Yûsuf (r. 1106-1142) al un taller cordobés. Según la crónica de al-Jaznâ’î, el mueble es la obra del letrado Abû Yahya al-‘Atad, que vivió mucho tiempo, hasta más de cien años. Según el autor, era un erudito de literatura y de poesía. Varios estudiantes de Fez y de otros países fueron sus alumnos[2].
El minbar está constituido de ocho escalones cuyo acceso está coronado con un arco morisco de cinco lóbulos bordeado por una inscripción cursiva. El respaldo y los derrames llevan una decoración que recuerda la de los minbar de la mezquita de la Kutubiya en Marakesh y la de la mezquita almorávide de Argel. Sobre la cara del respaldo, la ornamentación recurre a unos follajes de donde destaca una decoración vegetal a base de palmetas simétricas cuyos lóbulos inferiores se enrollan, formando volutas, y sirven de base a unos florones. Realizada sobre un fondo realzado con marquetería de la que sólo quedan unas pocas huellas, esta decoración está circunscrita dentro de un arco polilobulado idéntico que recuerda al que corona el primer escalón del púlpito, con claves bicolores donde alternan el ébano y el marfil. Las mochetas llevan follajes puntuados con nudosidades y palmetas. Los derrames combinan, como en los minbar de la Kutubiya y la mezquita de Córdoba, almocárabes en forma de estrella y composiciones vegetales muy finas. Lazos de madera recortada cuya combinación forma estrellas de ocho brazos, dodecágonos, polígonos rectangulares que se terminan por una punta saliente por una parte y entrante por otra[3] y hexágonos alargados, constituyen el dibujo global. Estas formas enmarcan palmetas digitadas esculpidas que respectan una simetría muy rigurosa. Y según H. Terrrasse, este « mueble de Fez nos enseña que el minbar almorávide de Marakesh no era un precioso accidente, sino una de las obras maestras que resultan de una larga tradición, la de los púlpitos andaluces, tradición fundada a finales del siglo X por el califa al-Hakam en Córdoba»[4].
