Le minbar de la mosquée al-Qarawiyyîn est une commande du sultan almoravide ‘Alî ibn Yûsuf (r. 1106-1142) à un atelier cordouan. D’après la chronique d’al-Jaznâ’î, le meuble est l’œuvre du lettré Abû Yahya al-‘Atad, qui eut une vie très longue et dépassa cent ans. C’était, dit-il, un maître en littérature et en poésie. Plusieurs étudiants de Fès et d’autres contrées suivirent son enseignement[2].
Le minbar est constitué de huit marches dont l’accès est surmonté d’un arc à cinq lobes outrepassé encadré par une inscription cursive. Le dossier et les joues sont meublés d’un décor qui rappelle celui des minbar de la mosquée de la Kutubiyya à Marrakech et de la grande mosquée almoravide d’Alger. Sur la face du dossier, l’ornementation fait appel à des rinceaux d’où se détache une décoration végétale à base de palmettes symétriques dont les lobes inférieures s’enroulent en volutes et servent de base à des fleurons. Exécutée sur un fond rehaussé de marqueterie dont il ne subsiste que quelques traces, cette décoration est circonscrite d’un arc polylobé identique et faisant écho à celui surmontant la première marche de la chaire, aux claveaux bicolores alternant l’ébène et l’ivoire. Les écoinçons sont meublés de rinceaux ponctués de nodosités et de palmettes. Les joues combinent, comme dans les minbar de la Kutubiyya et de la grande mosquée de Cordoue, des entrelacs étoilés et des compositions végétales d’une rare finesse. La trame d’ensemble est dessinée par des rubans de bois découpés dont l’assemblage forme des étoiles à huit pointes, des dodécagones, des polygones rectangulaires achevés par une pointe saillante d’un côté et rentrante de l’autre[3] et des hexagones allongés. Ces formes enserrent des palmettes digitées sculptées en respectant une symétrie assez rigoureuse. Et comme le dit H. Terrrasse, ce « meuble de Fès nous montre que le minbar almoravide de Marrakech n’était pas un magnifique accident, mais un des chefs d’œuvres produits par une longue tradition, celle des chaires andalouses, tradition fondée à la fin du Xe siècle par le calife al-Hakam à Cordoue »[4].
