This door belonged to the tabernacle of the first cathedral, Santa Maria de Sevilla, which was built on the site of the mosque and used for Christian worship from 1248 until the present Gothic church was built in the fifteenth century. It is a double door, decorated with interlace friezes, chiefly geometrically patterned ten-pointed stars which expand into hexagons and five-pointed stars. The motifs are surrounded by inscriptions from the Old and New Testaments, alluding to? je vérifie Psalm 53, v 1-3 and a Eucharistic quote
from Saint John’s Gospel (6: 50-57). The word 'Allah' (God) is carved several times on the door. The zoomorphic knockers are adorned with two splendid metal lionheads to which are attached foiled knobs decorated with crosses, tendrils and a Latin inscription alluding to the Lord. The lock is made of gilt iron and depicts the same plant motifs, plus an Arabic inscription in late cursive script.
In the nineteenth century, Amador de los Rios suggested that the door may have been made in the second half of the thirteenth century. Subsequent finds, however, indicate that it was possibly made in the fourteenth century by Toledo's renowned carpenters/craftsmen. This is the conclusion reached by scholars Gestoso and Camps, who have compared it with the doors made for the Ambassadors Room in Seville's Royal Alcazar (1366). do you agree?
It is also somewhat similar in style and design to other Mudejar doors – e.g. in the Iglesia de San Martin in Seville, the doors ? from the parish of San Andrès de Jaén (now in the Musée Archéologique National in Madrid), or those in? the church in the castle of Aracena (Huelva).
