Flasque à corps globuleux et aplati, au col muni de deux anses appliquées, cette gourde est formée de deux parties moulées et réunies. La décoration des deux faces est identique : une grande étoile à huit branches ornées d’oiseaux et de rinceaux, au centre de laquelle se trouve une autre étoile plus petite à six branches, du type sceau de Salomon, avec une rosette en son milieu.
Découverte dans des fouilles à Tyr, cette gourde appartient à un type en terre cuite moulée non glacée très répandu dans le Proche-Orient, surtout aux périodes ayyubide et mamluke. Malgré quelques évolutions, cette forme semble avoir perduré dans le temps, car des gourdes similaires datant du XIVe-XIIIe siècle avant J.-C. et provenant de Chypre et de Grèce ont été trouvées à Ras Shamra (Ougarit) en Syrie[1]. Des « ampoules » à motifs chrétiens et datant du VIe siècle présentent une forme comparable. Elles contenaient des huiles que les pèlerins ramenaient de Terre Sainte ou d’Égypte. Ainsi, le nom de « gourde de pèlerin » est souvent attribué aux gourdes d’époque islamique à cause de leur ressemblance avec ces dernières. Il est plus probable qu’elles servaient à contenir de l’eau car toutes sont en terre cuite non glacée, ce qui permettait à une partie du liquide de s’évaporer et de garder le reste frais.
Il existe deux types de gourdes : celles à panse aplatie, attribuées à la période ayyubide, et celles à panse convexe, mamlukes. Pour toutes, la même technique est utilisée : deux plats moulés sont collés par un ruban à un corps central sur lequel sont ajustés le col et les deux anses. Certaines de ces gourdes sont décorées avec des motifs géométriques et animaliers, des inscriptions, ainsi que des blasons de charge[2]. Leur fabrication est généralement attribuée à la région de Syrie car un grand nombre y a été trouvé lors de fouilles archéologiques. Des fours ont aussi été découverts à Hama et à Damas.
