Ce texte, faussement attribué à Jean Damascène, relate l’histoire christianisée de Bouddha telle qu’elle fut adaptée par les Chrétiens d’Orient : un roi indien enferme son fils pour le protéger du monde, mais celui-ci parvient à partir ; il découvre alors la souffrance humaine et se convertit au christianisme après sa rencontre avec un ermite. Le texte est écrit en arabe, en écriture naskhî, dans des encres brune, noire et rouge.
Le manuscrit est composé de cahiers irréguliers contenant du papier oriental (syrien ou égyptien) et du papier occidental pour des ajouts du XVIe siècle. Il contient neuf enluminures, réparties chacune sur une page. Chacune relate un épisode de l’histoire : Joasaph et son maître (f° 13r ) ; Joasaph et son père le roi (f° 13v ) ; parabole « le pêcheur et le rossignol » (f° 23v) ; Joasaph embrasse Barlaam (f° 32r) ; Barlaam donne la communion à Joasaph (f° 38r) ; Barlaam montre ses vêtements monastiques à Joasaph (f° 40r) ; Barlaam baptise Joasaph (f° 45v) ; Joasaph en prière (f° 77r) ; parabole de l’homme poursuivi par une licorne (f° 129 r).
Les enluminures se caractérisent par leur disposition en bandes. Le dessin est encadré par un décor architectural de tours et de bâtiments surmontés de tuiles bleues ou rouges, proches de ceux que l’on retrouve sur le fond des icônes byzantines. D’autres éléments, comme les tentures accrochées et des rideaux noués, les chaises à coussins, les vêtements, ainsi que les couronnes et autres accessoires, appartiennent également au répertoire byzantin. Très souvent, certains objets ou les têtes des personnages dépassent du cadre de la frise ; par ailleurs, la taille des personnages n’est pas toujours proportionnelle à celle du milieu représenté. Une influence des manuscrits arabes du XIIIe siècle a été notée par les chercheurs car l’artiste applique à la représentation des personnages les modèles que l’on retrouve dans des manuscrits irakiens comme les Maqamât d’al-Harîrî, et en particulier dans le dessin des visages et des mains. Une autre inspiration, sensible dans les images de végétaux et d’animaux, vient de copies du XIVe siècle de Kalîla et Dimna d’Ibn al-Muqaffa‘[1].
Il existe également des versions musulmanes de l’histoire où les deux personnages sont désignés sous les noms de Bodhasaph et Bilawahr. La version arabe islamique a été transmise par les ismaéliens à partir de l’Iran. Dès le XIIe siècle, des traductions en plusieurs langues − arabe, slave, arménien et éthiopien − furent connues, témoignant ainsi du dynamisme des échanges commerciaux et culturels d’est en ouest.
