Discovered in 1928 in the port sector of Tripoli, this marble plaque consists of fragments that fit together. The epigraphed field is framed with borders, with mouldings behind them. The text running over ten lines starts by a cross. All the words are separated by three vertically aligned dots like on the silver gros tournois of Tripoli.
This inscription is an important document for the history of the city of Tripoli during the Crusader period. The text tells us that Bohemond, Prince of Antioch and Count of Tripoli, had a tower called the "money tower" constructed in 1267, or 1268, or 1269: the fragmentation of the plaque has obliterated the last number, and there could be three or four "I"s after the "V" of the date. This is Bohemond VI, Prince of Antioch from 1251 to May 1267, date of the conquest of the city by the Mamluk sultan Baybars. The mint workshop no longer being usable, Bohemond built or developed one in Tripoli, city over which he reigned as Count (1251-1275). He then had a tower built, motivated no doubt by the need to protect himself from possible attack by the Mamluk. According to G. Schlumberger, this is where the beautiful silver gros tournois were made bearing the name of the Count, a cross pattée in a frame made of corners and arcs of circles and, at the back, the name of the city of Tripoli. Although only the title of Count is indicated on these coins, this does not imply that Bohemond renounced his title of Prince of Antioch, which he claims in fact on this monument inscription.
This plaque was no doubt affixed to a wall to be exhibited to the public, but its location cannot be identified as the tower in question as well as the other Crusader monuments were burned and torn down after the city was seized by the Mamluk. The use of stone plaques to announce to the public decrees[1], laws, as well as the foundations of monuments is a practice that dates back to Antiquity, and which is shared by Orient and the Occident. Many inscriptions are found in situ, but others are the only surviving elements of buildings that have disappeared forever, the only evidence of their existence.
