Découverte en 1928 dans le secteur du port à Tripoli, cette plaque de marbre est constituée de quatre fragments jointifs. Le champ épigraphié est encadré de bandeaux, avec des moulures à l’arrière. Le texte de dix lignes commence par une croix. Tous les mots sont séparés par trois points superposés comme sur les gros d’argent de Tripoli.
Cette inscription est un document important pour l’histoire de la ville de Tripoli à l’époque des Croisés. Le texte nous apprend que Bohémond, prince d’Antioche et comte de Tripoli, fit construire une tour dite « de la Monnaie » en 1267, ou 1268 ou 1269 : la cassure de la plaque a oblitéré le dernier chiffre, et il peut y avoir trois ou quatre « I » après le « V » de la date. Il s’agit de Bohémond VI, prince d’Antioche de 1251 à mai 1267, date de la conquête de la ville par le sultan mamluk Baybars. L’atelier monétaire n’étant plus utilisable, Bohémond en construisit ou en développa un à Tripoli, ville sur laquelle il régnait en tant que comte (1251-1275). Il fit alors construire une tour, guidé sans doute par le besoin de se protéger contre une éventuelle attaque mamluke. D’après G. Schlumberger, c’est de là que sont sortis les beaux gros d’argent portant le nom du comte, une croix pattée dans un cadre formé d’angles et d’arcs de cercles et, au revers, celui de la cité de Tripoli. Si seul le titre du comte est indiqué sur ces monnaies, ceci n’impliquerait pas une renonciation de Bohémond à son titre de prince d’Antioche, qu’il revendique d’ailleurs sur cette inscription monumentale.
Cette plaque était sans doute fixée sur un mur pour être exposée au public, mais on ne peut identifier son emplacement car la tour de la Monnaie ainsi que les autres monuments croisés ont été brûlés et démolis, suite à la prise de la ville par les Mamluks. L’usage du lapidaire pour annoncer au public les décrets[1], les lois, ainsi que les fondations de monuments est une pratique qui remonte à l’Antiquité, et que partagent Orient et Occident. Beaucoup d’inscriptions se trouvent in situ, mais d’autres sont les seuls éléments rescapés de bâtiments à jamais disparus, et leurs seuls témoins.
