Hafsid aqueduct

The ancient Roman aqueduct is linked to two other water conveyances built by the Hafsids, transporting the waters of Zaghouan to the gardens of Abu Fihr, between Tunis and Ariana.
Hafsid aqueducts consist of rubble-stone conduits covered with a hydraulic coating. The strain on the aqueducts is relieved by semicircular arches, sometimes in superposed double rows, built of stone and resting on rectangular pisé piers clad in stone. The form of these aqueducts and the construction methods used were inspired by Roman hydraulic installations, particularly the aqueducts of Zaghouan.
