L’animal au long cou, à la tête petite par rapport au reste du corps et auquel manquent les pattes antérieures, les oreilles et les cornes, se tient debout. L'allure est celle d'un bélier à l'aspect robuste et au corps disproportionné. Le traitement de l’œil, en amande et assez protubérant, se retrouve sur des rondes-bosses animales attribuées à l’Espagne andalouse. Sur son poitrail pend un croissant retenu par un ruban noué autour du cou. Il semble avoir un rôle prophylactique, le croissant étant le symbole de l'Islam.
Cette sculpture servait sans doute de bouche de fontaine, étant donné que le corps est creux et que le ventre est percé d'un orifice destiné à permettre le passage de l'eau, qui devait jaillir en cascade par la gueule de l’animal. Les fontaines étaient un symbole de prospérité en pays d’Islam et les bouches de fontaine en bronze reflètent le grand raffinement atteint par les sociétés maghrébines au Moyen Âge.
Cet exemplaire est à rattacher à toute une série de rondes-bosses en forme d’animaux, généralement des cerfs, des canidés ou des oiseaux, découverts dans divers pays musulmans et notamment en Égypte[1], au Maghreb et en Espagne, à l'exemple des bouches de fontaine en forme de cerfs en provenance de Madînat al-Zahrâ’, exposées actuellement au musée archéologique de Cordoue (inv. 500) et au musée national de Qatar. Des aquamaniles en bronze en forme de paon, de fabrication andalouse, très probablement cordouane, sont à signaler (fin du Xe - début du XIe siècle)[2]. Les rondes-bosses en forme de lion ne sont pas moins fréquentes à la même époque. Elles sont soit égyptiennes[3], soit espagnoles[4], mais ne sont pas toutes des bouches de fontaine. Un autre spécimen en pierre provient de la fouille de la Qal'a de Béni Hammad en Algérie[5].
