Ce bol très restauré de forme hémisphérique à lèvre arrondie façonné dans une pâte argileuse jaune claire a reçu sur ses deux faces une glaçure stannifère assez épaisse. Les formes aussi bien ouvertes que fermées trouvent leur équivalent dans la céramique maghrébine et andalouse.
Le décor animalier et végétal est réalisé en bleu de cobalt et brun de manganèse. Sur le fond meublé de fins rinceaux végétaux bleus, deux animaux gracieux à longues oreilles sont tracés d’une manière stylisée. Il s’agit sans doute de deux gazelles qui se tiennent face à face et semblent se précipiter l’une vers l’autre. Deux médaillons circulaires polylobés ornés d’entrelacs sont disposés de part et d’autre.
Cette pièce appartient à la production de céramique d’époque hafside (Tunisie, Algérie orientale, 1228 – 1574), pendant laquelle triomphe un décor caractérisé par une grande sobriété, s’exprimant dans quelques séries à travers des compositions rayonnantes (en rosace, en étoile,…). Ceci n'est certainement pas étranger au poids du legs de la civilisation almohade qui régna sur tout le Maghreb et l'Andalousie pendant au moins deux siècles. Le décor animalier est bel et bien présent au sein de cette production. Il s’incarne essentiellement à travers des motifs tels que la gazelle, le lapin, le poisson. D’autres motifs sont attestés, comme c’est le cas sur une pièce provenant également des fouilles de la qasaba de Tunis décorée d’un navire[1].
L'Égypte fatimide a fourni également des plats en céramique décorés de gazelles stylisées[2], dont les corps sont néanmoins plus harmonieux que sur les pièces maghrébines.
Quelques pièces de céramique de formes variées ornées de gazelles aux longues oreilles et aux têtes renversées datant des XIIe-XIIIe siècles furent aussi retrouvées à Paterna (Espagne)[3].
Ces représentations animalières trouvent aussi leurs équivalents dans les céramiques andalouses et mudéjar du début du XVe siècle, à l’exemple de la production lustrée de Valence, Manisès, ou Malaga, parmi laquelle certains décors rappellent fortement celui de cet objet[4].
