Two undulating ribbons outline mandorla-shaped medallions (four and the beginnings of a fifth), each filled with a five-lobed palmette. Half-palmettes may be found in the intervals. Two ribbons frame the whole – one striated, the other smooth.
The decoration is strongly marked by Sasanian influences conveyed through the third style of Samarra, which had been in vogue in Mesopotamia since the ninth century[1] and was taken up by Tulunid art in Egypt. This style seems not to have reached Ifriqiya until the late tenth or early eleventh century. The door of the maqsura of the Great Mosque of Kairouan is a fine example of the style.
