Taynal mosque Inscriptions

1) Above the entrance doorway; in square Kufic:

محمد / أبو بكر / عمر/ عثمان/ علي / طلحة / زبير/ سعد / سعيد / عبد الله / عبد الرحمن.

"Muhammad/ Aba Bakr/ ‘Umar/ ‘Uthman/ ‘Ali/ Talhah/ Zubayr/ Sa‘d/ Sa‘id/ ‘Abd Allah/ ‘Abd al-Rahman."

Surrounding these names, in naskhi:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم أمر بإنشاء هذا الجامع المبارك المقر الأشرفي العالي المولوي الأميري الناصري نائب السلطنة الشريفة بطرابلس المحروسة إتماما في أيام الملك الناصر في شهر رجب سنة ست وثلاثين وسبعمائة.

"In the name of Allah the Beneficent, the Merciful. Has ordered the construction of this blessed mosque His Excellency the noble, the high master loyal to Prince Al-Nasir, Governor of the Royal Sultanate of Tripoli the Well Guarded. It was completed under the reign of Al-Malik Al-Nasir, in the month of Rajab of the year 736" [February 14 to March 14, 1336] 

2) On the inner door, in naskhi:

من بنى مسجدا لله ولو كمفحص قطاة بنى الله تعالى له قصرا في الجنة.

"He who builds a mosque, be it as big as a nest, God builds him a palace in Paradise."

3) To the right of the inner door, in naskhi:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم أمر بإنشاء هذا الجامع المعمور بذكر الله تعالى مولانا المقر المولوي الكافلي السيدي المالكي المخدومي السيفي طينال الملكي الناصري كافل الممالك الشريفة الطرابلسية بلغه الله آماله وتقبل في الصالحات أعماله ووقف عليه لمصالحه المعينة في كتاب وقفه جميع البستان المعروف بالحموي بظاهر طرابلس وجميع الحانوتين الملاصقين لبابه و جميع البستان المعروف قديما بالطنطاش بسقي طرابلس وجميع الحانوتين الملاصقين لسوق السلاح بجوار الحمام المعروف بأسندمر وهي الآن ملك الوقف وجميع ثلث الخان المعروف بدار الوكالة وجميع القرية المعروفة بأزرونية من عمل عرقا بجون طرابلس وشرط أنه مهما فضل من ريع هذا الوقف عن أرباب وظائفه ومصالحه المعينة في كتابه يصرف للفقراء والمساكين المقيمين بطرابلس والواردين إليها حسب ما يراه الناظر في ذلك من غير أن يرتب لأحد مرتبا في كل شهر أو كل يوم ومن غير ذلك أو بدله أو رتب شيئا مستمرا كانت عليه لعنة الله والملائكة والناس أجمعين.

"In the name of Good the Beneficent, the Merciful. Has ordered the construction of this mosque erected to the glory of Allah, our master, the commander, the lord benefactor, the master, Sayf Al-Din Taynal, loyal to King Al-Nasir, governor of the royal province of Tripoli, may Allah fulfil his hopes and accept his actions as deserving works. And he has constituted a waqf for the benefit of the mosque, to be used for the functions specified in his written waqf act: the entire garden known as Al-Hamawi, on the outskirts of Tripoli, and the whole of two shops next to the door of the mosque and the entire garden known as Altunshah, in the irrigated land of Tripoli, and the whole of two shops next to the arms suq near the baths known as Usandamur, are now the property of the founder, and the entire third of the khan known as the old caravanserai house [Dar Al-Wakalah], and the entire village known as Azruniya, the dependencies of ‘Arqa, in the bay of Tripoli. And he has stipulated that all the excess of the revenue of this waqf, after deduction of the expenses set forth for the salary of employees and functions specified in his act, is to be allocated to the poor and destitute who live in Tripoli and to those who travel to Tripoli, according to what the administrator shall deem appropriate in this respect, however without him being able to allocate to anyone a fixed wage, neither monthly nor daily. And should anyone change these provisions,  or interfere with them, or allocate a fixed wage, he shall be struck by the curse of Allah, of the angels and of all men."

4) To the left of the inner door, in naskhi:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم أمر بإنشاء هذه التربة المباركة رحم الله ساكنها مولانا ملك الأمراء المشار إليه أثابه الله وتقبل منه وجزاه خيرا ورضي عنه ووقف على مصالحها وأرباب وظائفها المعينة في كتابها جميع الطبقة المجاورة لها من الشرق وتعرف بالخطيب وجميع القيسارية المستجدة المجاورة لمسجد أرزني من الغرب بسكن الخلعيين وعدد حوانيتها ست عشرة وطباقها ست عشرة وجميع الحانوتين بطرف سوق الحدادين من الصف الغربي المعروف قديما بأبي ربه وجميع الحوانيت والطباق إنشاء الواقف بالعرصة القديمة وجميع الست حوانيت المستجدة إنشاء الواقف وتعرف قديما بسويقة القاضي والثلاث طباق الراكبة عليها وجميع الحاكورة المجاورة لهذا الجامع من القبلة (وجميع الأرض المجاورة للميدان من القبلة) وشرط أنه مهما فضل من ريع هذا الوقف عن أرباب وظائفه ومصالحه المعينة في كتاب الوقف يصرف للفقراء والمساكين المقيمين والواردين كما شرط في وقف الجامع من غير ترتيب ومن رتب لأحد مرتبا مستمرا أو جدد لأحد شيئا على سبيل الراتب (المستمر) كان الله محاربه ومحاسبه ومكافيه وحشره مع الأخسرين أعمالا الذين ضل سعيهم في الحياة الدنيا وهم يحسبون أنهم يحسنون صنعا.

"In the name of God the Beneficent, the Merciful. Has ordered the construction of this blessed mausoleum, may Allah have pity on those who rest here, our master, the previously named king of princes, may Allah reward him, may He accept (his prayers), may He grant him goodness and be happy with him. And he has constituted a waqf to upkeep the mausoleum and for the salaries of those functions specified in his act (of foundation): the entire upper storey next to the mausoleum, to the east, called (the room) of the preacher; and the entire market recently erected next to the Al-Arzuni mosque, to the  west, where are established the sellers of used dresses, and the number of these shops is sixteen and that of its rooms on the upper storey is sixteen; the entirety of the two shops on the side of the blacksmiths market, on the west side, formerly called Abu Rabbih; and the entirety of the shops and rooms on the upper storey, which the founder has constituted in the former enclosure; and the entirety of the six shops recently opened constructed by the founder, (formerly called Muzaffar), in the Suwayqat Al-qadi; and the three rooms that are above (these shops); and all the enclosed land adjacent to this mosque on the south; and all the land adjacent to the square to the south. An he has stipulated that any excess of revenue from this waqf, after deduction of the expenses set forth for the employees and functions specified in the waqf act, shall be allocated to the poor and the destitute, inhabitants or travellers, as it was stipulated for the waqf of the mosque, that is, without fixed wage. And if someone allocates to anyone  a fixed wage or instituted wage that looks like a fixed wage, Allah shall be his enemy, shall ask him to render accounts for this and to repay it, and he shall be judged on Judgement Day among the most devoid of (good) deeds, those whose efforts have been an absolute waste in the life of this world, even though he considers having acted properly."

5) Inscriptions on the minbar:

a) At the top of the minbar, in naskhi:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم إنما يعمر مساجد الله من آمن بالله واليوم الآخر وأقام الصلاة وأتى الزكاة ولم يخش إلا الله فعسى أولئك أن يكونوا من المهتدين. تكمل هذه المنبر في شهر ذو القعدة سنة ست وثلاثين وسبعمائة.

"In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful… Quran IX,18. This minbar was completed in the month of Dhûl-qi‘da in the year 736" [from June 11 to July 10, 1336]. 

b) In front of the inner face:

عمل المعلم محمد الصفدي رحم الله من ترحم عليه.

"Work of master Muhammad Al-Safadi, may Allah have pity on he who implores His pity for him."
