La tradition de la fabrication de céramique est une constante dans la civilisation islamique. Les méthodes de fabrication d’époque omeyyade (661-750) se retrouvent à l’époque abbasside (749-1258), pendant laquelle les potiers ont très largement développé les techniques décoratives.
Jusque dans les années 1990, les archéologues pensaient que le simple transfert du califat de Damas à Bagdad avait créé un vide culturel dans la Grande Syrie et dans le Sud en particulier. De nouvelles études de sites situés en Syrie, en Jordanie et en Palestine ont démontré, après un réexamen des couches archéologiques et la découverte de couches omeyyades sous les couches abbassides, qu’il y a eu continuité.
Ces quatre bols sont représentatifs des céramiques non glacées abbassides réalisées au Sud de la Syrie (Jordanie) comme à Jarash, Tabaqat Fahl, et Umm al Qays, et Zuraih près de Tufayla, qui connut un peuplement nabatéen, byzantin, omeyyade et abbasside.
Les bols A, B et C sont en argile, le D est fabriqué en stéatite. La fabrication d’objets en stéatite remonte très loin dans le temps, bien avant l’époque islamique, et connut un très grand développement jusqu’au Xe siècle jusqu’en Iran oriental (lampes à huile, bols, brûles-parfum). Beaucoup d’objets proviennent de Jordanie, de sites fouillés par le Service des Archéologies Générales puis par l’Université Jordanienne.
Les quatre bols présentent tous la même forme : base plate, parois verticales, bords droits, une forme très attestée aussi à la même époque en céramique lustrée et en verre.
Le bol A, pièce maîtresse de cet ensemble, est fabriqué avec une argile locale mêlée à de la pierre pilée et des éléments organiques. Le décor géométrico-floral, répété sur la panse, est peint sur engobe et cuit en même temps que le support. Le même principe est appliqué pour les bols B et C, seuls diffèrent la couleur de la pâte et les décors.
Le décor du bol B est un réseau de mailles ponctué de petits points qui dessinent des rosaces et des fleurettes quadrilobées. Les dessins sont simples, réalisés à main levée.
Le bol C porte un décor très simple constitué de motifs triangulaires moulés répartis à l’intérieur de trois bandeaux circulaires, avec quelques lignes striées se répétant et des petits boutons en saillie par rapport à la surface du bol. Ce type de décor est extrêmement courant à l’époque sur la céramique, glacée ou non, ou sur le verre.
Le récipient en stéatite, à deux anses plates, présente le même profil. Le décor très simple consiste en lignes verticales et circulaires qui croisent des cercles et des demi-cercles striés.
