Ce brûle-parfum présente un appendice creux, probablement destinée à insérer un long manche en bois qui n’a pas été retrouvé. Il dispose de trois pieds en forme de sabots, comme un récipient de Mafraq (J 15711). Le récipient censé accueillir de l’encens ou du charbon est d’une hauteur peu élevée. Sur son bord, on peut voir quatre petites saillies qui servaient peut-être à maintenir un couvercle. À l’intérieur de la charnière en anneau, une tige fait office d’attache autour de laquelle les anneaux du couvercle pivotaient.
L’objet ajouré est orné d’une frise d’animaux, probablement des bouquetins, sur un fond de motifs floraux. Il y a six bouquetins dans différentes postures. Certains ont la tête renversée en arrière, position courante dans les scènes de chasse des mosaïques byzantines.
Cette pièce peut être comparée à un encensoir trouvé à Amman, complètement préservé. Ce dernier (J 1633), qui ressemble à une forme architecturale, possède un couvercle en forme de dôme présentant une série d’ouvertures cintrées dans le tambour. Un bouton se trouve au sommet de ce dôme. L’extrémité de la poignée est sculptée en forme de tête de lion. Sur le corps et le dôme, on peut voir des gravures représentant un motif floral sur un fond de petits points. La poignée, le corps et le couvercle furent moulés séparément.
La forme de ce brûle-parfum se retrouve de l’Espagne à l’est de l’Iran, dès les premiers siècles de la civilisation islamique. On s’en servait également dans l’Égypte copte. Les pieds en forme de sabots se retrouvent aussi en Iran et dans le Moyen Orient, jusqu’au XIVe siècle. Les ornements ajourés sont en général utilisés sur le couvercle, mais peuvent parfois se retrouver également sur le corps de l’encensoir, aux IXe et Xe siècles (en Asie centrale et dans l’Iran oriental).
