Le premier minaret de la mosquée al-Qarawiyyîn a été détruit lors de l’agrandissement de la mosquée par les Zénètes, qui érigèrent la tour située actuellement au milieu du côté sud-ouest de la cour. Une inscription disparue mentionnait sa date d’édification. Il s’agit d’une tour carrée dont les murs sont en pierres, renforcés à une date indéterminée par des briques cuites. Les façades sont dépourvues de décor et ne sont percées que de minuscules ouvertures à arcs outrepassés, pour l’aération et l’éclairage : simple et surmontée de lobes, celle de la partie inférieure s’inscrit dans un encadrement rectangulaire, tandis qu’à l’étage, ce sont des baies géminées. Le minaret surmonté d’une petite coupole hémisphérique s’achève par une plateforme dont le parapet couronné de merlons fait saillie sur la tour. Une porte percée sur le côté sud-est de la tour donne accès à un escalier à volée droite, couvert de berceaux rampants, qui permet au muezzin de monter sur la plateforme pour l’appel à la prière.
Ce minaret adopte ainsi le plan carré déjà développé dans les mosquées de Kairouan et de Cordoue. Sensiblement différente du premier dont le plan est constitué de deux tours superposées de forme prismatique, la tour de la Qarawiyyîn constitue le prototype dont s’inspirèrent les architectes marocains.
